Eve Online – New Character Exploration Alpha Challenge…

It’s been a quiet few days, just a few Venture kills and not a lot else to write about. To be truthful I’ve been ship spinning a lot and have also been preparing one of my alts for sale.

During a discussion with a few like-minded types over Discord on Wednesday, it was put to me that due to an Alpha character’s slow training and limited skills it was impossible to make a good early impression on new players and further that without utilising real cash the path to good isk would be slow, boring and laborious… and probably disheartening due to regular deaths. I disagreed, and foolishly stated that I was confident in my ability to produce 100m isk on day one of a brand new character through exploration, without dying.

What had I done? The phrase ‘challenge accepted’ emanated from my lips and I curled up inwardly.

Oh well.

On Thursday afternoon I switched on the PC, started up the launcher and stared forlornly at the new character creation screen. I wasn’t concerned about my ability to find sites (but as we shall see, I should have been), but more that this was going to be several hours worth of frustration, gate jumps, death and failed hacks.

Let’s be clear here before we continue, I’m not saying that this is something that anyone who’s never played EVE before is going to be able to do. A LOT of this challenge was going to be helped by experience, far more than equipment and skills. Granted you could strike lucky on your first Sansha relic site, but I wanted this challenge to illustrate more than anything that knowledge and wisdom will beat skills and assets hands down.

So, what race to start with? I wanted something with a racial T1 scanning frigate that was flexible, so the Magnate was out although it would have been my preferred choice had wormhole exploration been my primary intended activity. In the end I decided to go with Gallente, purely because I have no Gallente characters and the Imicus would be just as good as any other T1 scanning ship if I was to be primarily lurking around high and low sec. It has the extra mid slot for a rangefinding array or cargo scanner and can fit three stabilisers if needed – not that it would be of any use if you’re being hunted by someone like me, but hey, false confidence is better than nothing.

Enter Evil Ern…

Yes, he’s named after my cat.

Not wanting to waste any time I cancelled the tutorial at startup and headed straight over to the career agents in Trossere, starting my hacking and archaeology skills straight away with a view to doing some wormhole diving as soon as archaeology had gotten to level 2 at least.

Obviously I chose the exploration career agent as I wanted that nice, free Imicus that she was duty bound to provide me with at the end of my arduous grilling.

I spent probably 30 minutes running the career missions in a Velator…

… and then proceeded to use my reward money from those missions to fit out my free Imicus. The market up here is terrible, and I detest Dodixie, so it took a little while to gather all the fittings but pretty soon I was up and running. I’d decided that my early efforts were going to be in low sec, graduating later to wormhole space. I settled on Metserel being a quiet backwater, close to trade and giving access to a handful of lowsec systems and quiet highsec systems to dive from. Goinard and the pipe through to Kador was also relatively close by.

Here’s the Imicus fit I settled on:

Just to add a couple of points, I decided on two stabs should I be tackled on a gate and also chose Emission Scope Sharpeners over Gravity Capacitor Upgrades as I had already accepeted that Level 3 sites were going to be my primary diet on this trip, plus I wanted to maximise my chances in wormhole relic sites. Unless I got very lucky and got a few Sansha relic sites in wormhole space, this was going to be a relatively drawn out affair…

Let’s get going!

I won’t bore you with the intricacies of each and every hack and jump, suffice to say in total the task took me around six hours. Here are my jumps for the trip…

A LOT of these jumps were made to pick up and return loot to specific holding stations and weren’t double backs per se.

However, after all that I made:

126m isk, or approximately 20m an hour – in reality 40m as I was only actively playing for three hours.

As far as RNG goes I’d say I was incredibly unlucky. I found a lot of part hacked sites, barren wormholes, crappy sites in wormholes, busy nullsec pockets and was hunted quite a lot. I also failed a lot of the top level hacks. In fact, the best site I found was a Sansha relic site in Avair which netted me 30m and tipped me over the edge of the 100m barrier.

I did not, however, die.

Having said that, considering I am less than 24hrs old at the time of writing I don’t think 126m isk is sum any new player would be disappointed with. I mean, in terms of skills I haven’t even hit level three on either my archaeology or hacking skills. Yes, there were a few failed hacks and to be frank I stopped using my cargo scanner in the end as it was simply too frustrating.

It was a fun challenge nonetheless!
